Next up was James and myself. Being our first seminar slot we found the whole thing slightly nerve racking, especially following Dave's excellent first slot. I kicked off the proceedings explaining the Combat Arena ethos of pure street reality based combat, and introduced us both.
The first subject I covered was Adrenaline and how it affects the body in a combat situation. I described the side effects such as loss of fine motor function and got a few giggles with my analogy of trying to pick your nose after a car crash.

The most important point I wanted to convey was the Fight, Flight or Freeze response. I did this by demonstrating how to build up reaction and conditioning drills.
After getting the guys to move round with each other for a bit. I then explained that once they are comfortable with the pace that they were going at, to then up it a little. Eventually stick the gloves on and start building the power and intensity up. We finished the section with a demo with the gloves on, James as usual bounced me into the floor a few times!

Gavin explaining nasty places to hit! |
My next bit covered how to enter in on an attacker and taking the fight out of them. I gave a few examples of how to plow into someone like a train, and a few nasty things to do on the way in. Having covered how to get into an opponent James took over and showed some things to do once you got there!

James demonstrated some drills that develop close in grappling skills, leading into arm bars, chokes and other nasty stuff.
He then gave a brief explanation of how to attack the pressure points (and demonstrated on me!). Then James showed the guys how to put them into the drills that they had just done, and yeah you guessed it, I was on the receiving end again! The most important point James made about both grappling and the pressure point work, was the need to earn it. Explaining sometimes it won't always come off as planned!
