Last up was John teaching the Kempo approach to knife work. He started off explaining that "knife defense" is what you do as the absolute last resort. Your first course of action is "getting the hell out of Dodge" as he puts it, if you can't run you pick up something big and hard to smash over the attackers noggin, and last, if all else fails, to tackle the attacker unarmed.
He went on to describe his "BBC" Theory, "Body, Block and Counter". The first of these being the "Body", which means to get the body offline. He showed various drills involving side steps and ducks. Which he then put together in a free moving drill requiring evasion of attacks using body evasion alone, no hands (I hate this drill, which after 18 years I still can't do!).

Next John moved onto the "Block" or parry part. He worked various drills against slashes and straight stabs. With all the drills he continuously emphasized the need to get the body out of the way first, then the Block. Arguing that it's pretty hard I to block with a knife sticking in you. There's a certain logic when you look at it like that!
The free flowing drill involved the attacker throwing any attack, and the defender having to parry and evade the attacks. This really allows us to demonstrate the fluid defensive side of the Kempo to it's fullest.

Then John reached his favorite part, which me and James had been dreading, the "Counter". Which basically means hitting people. Not wishing to disappoint we were soon being locked, hit and slammed seven ways from sunday! Again he said that without the body and the block there could be no counter. BBC!

All in all, it was a great day. A lot was learnt, many new friends were made and the whole thing couldn't have gone better. When I initially approached Dave about the seminar I had wanted it to be a mutual exchange of ideas from diverse approaches, I couldn't of dreamed of how well things turned out.
Thanks to Dave, James and John for agreeing to do the seminar. A big thanks to everyone who attended and made the day such a success!
The next couple of pages have some photo's of highlights from the day. Drop me email if you would like copies of the full size photo's from the day!
If anyone is interested in instruction from any of the instructors teaching, please drop us mail or contact Sifu Dave through his website!
